Christian Medical College, Vellore is the first medical college in India offering Masters level course (M.Sc) in Biostatistics in 1986. Demography, and Research Methodology including Epidemiological thinking to students were included from the beginning. Currently, the Master’s program is recognized by The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai. The most prominent and distinctive feature of the Master’s program in Biostatistics is the involvement of students in the journal club wherein each and every faculty imparts innovative methods that have been recently developed in peer reviewed journals and, helps the students to update their knowledge.
The department was recognized for PhD in Biostatistics (interdisciplinary) by the University of Madras from 1977 and later on transferred to The Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai in 2006. The department was also recognized for PhD in Biostatistics under the Biostatistics Resource and Training Center (BRTC) by the Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore from 2011. Currently 4 candidates each in both the universities have been pursuing for PhD.
The department currently continues to offer courses in Biostatistics to Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. These vary in duration and content, depending on the needs of trainees in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs within the institution.

- M.Sc., (Medical Physics)
- M.Sc., (Medical Sociology)
- Managerial Diploma in Community Health Management (DCHM)
The M.Sc. Program
Biostatistics is the application of statistical methods to biological research and most commonly to the medical and public health research. The discipline is majorly concerned with the design of experiments, surveys, observational and experimental studies and analysis of data from these studies. Biostatisticians play an essential role in the design and analyses of major areas of medical researches like epidemiological research studies, Laboratory research studies and Clinical trials.
Need for Biostatisticians
As there is more and more Multinational Pharmaceutical Industries and Research organizations flourishing in India, there is growing demand for Biostatisticians and the M,Sc., graduates of biostatistics in Academic research centers and universities, Pharmaceutical industries and in Government sectors.
Faculties & Resources
The Department has six permanent faculty members and other staff members who are involved in research and programming activities. Faculties from McMaster University, Canada and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA visit the department to teach and share their expertise through workshops. The Department of Biostatistics operates a computer cell that support good network and specialized softwares. The Department library has an excellent collection of books and Research Journals in Biostatistics, Demography and Epidemiology.
The goal of this program is to train students in statistical methods, as applied to the problems in the biomedical and health sciences. During the course, students learn the basic principles of biostatistics, data analysis with specific computing applications. Students have 24 hours access to computing facilities with up-to-date statistical software (SAS, STATA, SPSS and S plus) through Biostatistics Resource and Training Center (BRTC). Students are also presented with an opportunity to participate in consultation services provided by the department to other faculties and students in the college. Second year students will be posted in the Hospital for statistical consultations. This provides an exposure to ideas, methodologies and techniques needed to practice as an applied statistician. The program consists of two-year of full-time study which includes the successful completion of written exams and the Master’s thesis. The Master’s thesis is usually done during the second year of the program. The course consists of combination of lectures, seminars and practical exercises. The courses leading to M.Sc., degree include
